From Concept to Screen: How We Produce a Branded Documentary in LA

Every documentary starts the same way: someone has a story worth telling and no idea how to tell it on screen. At Smart Studio LA, we have been turning brand stories into cinematic films since 2014.

Phase 1: Story Development

We start with a discovery call and a creative brief. We ask: who is this for? What do you want them to feel? What is the one thing they should remember? From there we build a script outline and a visual storyboard.

Phase 2: Pre-Production

Location scouting, talent coordination, equipment prep, shot list finalization. This is the phase most productions skip. We never skip it. The shoot is only as good as the prep.

Phase 3: Production

Multi-day shoots across locations. Cinematic camera work, professional lighting, clean audio. We direct, we capture, and we make it look like the budget was twice what it was.

Phase 4: Post-Production

Edit, color grade, sound design, music score, motion graphics, and titles. We also cut a 90-second trailer and a full social media package so the film works everywhere from a festival screen to an Instagram story.

The result is a film your audience will actually watch — and share.
